5 Ways to Write a Great Internet Dating Profile Tag Line

Mr And Mrs Globe

When you search through the online profiles here at Datepad (or on other free internet dating sites like it), you might be attracted to several different elements of the search page. The initial photo thumbnail. The person's age and location. And, of course, the tag line.

Unfortunately, though, many people don't even bother creating a tag line to accompany their profile. Perhaps they think that nobody reads or pays attention to them. Perhaps they can't think of anything to say in so small a space. But no matter what your reasons might be for skipping this little step when creating your internet dating profile, they're just not good enough. Because if you do it right, your tag line can be a great tool for increasing your profile views... and for assuring that the right kind of people find their way to your profile.

There are plenty of great ways to create an internet dating profile tag line. Below, you'll find the five types of tag lines that we at Datepad have found to be most effective. Which one you choose depends on what you're looking for from your tag line... and who you want to see it.

Tag Line 1

Describe Yourself. This is probably the most common way to use an internet dating tag line, and if you do it right it can be really effective. The secret to describing yourself accurately but succinctly? Be specific. While you can always go with "Green-eyed Beauty," you'll say a lot more --and inspire a lot more curiosity-- with "Rabid Scrabble Player and Murder Mystery Party Game Writer." You will also tend to attract the kind of people who are more interested in who you are than what you look like, which is always a plus.

Tag Line Type 2

Describe What You Want. This is another hugely common use of the dating profile tag line. And while the type of person you don't want visiting your profile may tend to ignore what you request here, it may be a good way to capture the attention of somebody who may otherwise pass your profile by. Like the self-descriptive tag line described above, the secret to this kind of tag line is specificity. Be clear about what you want, whether it be a personality trait, a type of career, or a love for Woody Allen movies. You never know who might drop by to see what other traits you might be looking for.

Tag Line Type 3

Describe How you See Something. Another good way to use your profile tag line is to describe your perspective on any number of things, including love, relationships, life, sex, or anything else. Sometimes a short sentence can give an insight into your character or point of view that reading your whole profile may not. Don't know how to sum up your feelings in one short sentence? Go looking for quotes or snippets of poetry that describe them for you, and use one of those instead.

Tag Line Type 4: Make it a Test

This can be a lot of fun. If you're hoping that a particular type of person visits your profile, you can use your tag line as bait. Instead of describing yourself or your ideal partner, use an obscure quote or statement that only a certain type of person would be able to recognize. Whether it be the life philosophy you gained from studying Nietzsche or a line from Lord of the Rings, it may be a great way to attract the kind of person you'd be able to relate to and share interests with.

Tag Line Type 5: Make 'em Laugh

If you want to say something about your personality without making a broad statement or trying to define who you are, go for comedy. A funny internet dating profile tag line is a great way to attract interesting people to your profile. It's an especially good choice if you don't feel 100% confident about the photo you chose for your profile. If you feel that your photo won't tempt tons of perspective dates to view your profile, you never know if a glimpse of your personality just might.
