Be Prepared In The Case of an Emergency

Emergency Kit

A few tips and advice on how you can prepare yourself in the event of a disaster

We hear almost on a daily basis of natural disasters hitting all over the world from floods, hurricanes, wave surges, power outage, storms, droughts, extreme temperatures and forest fires, landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, epidemics and insect infestations.

Irrespective of what form of disaster has occurred, it is best to be as prepared as possible in the event of such an emergency.

Here is a list of a few items that will be beneficial for you to have on hand and ready to use in the event of a disaster. Disaster relief specialists recommend that these items be stocked at all times, within easy reach and everyone in the family aware of where they are located. Start with at least a 3 day supply and add more if you feel necessary. Perishable items should be replaced as needed or necessary.

The Bare Essentials

First Aid-Kit
Sleeping bags (one for every member of the family)
Thermal blankets
Flashlights (hand cranked or battery operated: if battery, include extra batteries
Comfortable clothing (sweatpants, sweatshirts and a T-shirt is best)
Rain coat and rain pants
Sturdy boots or running shoes
Comfortable socks
Current prescription glasses and any prescription medication
Gas masks (especially if you are in one of the top 120 major cities for terror attacks
Dust masks (one for each family member)
Underwear (at least 2 sets for each family member)

Communication

Radio (solar, hand cranked or battery operated; if battery, include extra batteries)
Cell phone (it might still work)
Note pad and pen/pencil
Phone numbers of friends/family
$200 cash and spare change (bank machines won’t work during a disaster)
Flares
Whistle

Hygiene

Portable toilet (a bucket will do if you don’t have anything else)
Liquid bleach (a capful in portable toilet to keep down bacteria and smell)
Sponge
Surgical gloves
Toilet paper (one roll per person)
Garbage bags (for human waste and other garbage)

Personal Hygiene

Toothbrush and toothpaste
Dental floss
Comb or brush
Hair ties or clips
Deodorant
Soap
Tampons/sanitary napkins
Hand wipes

Food and Water

Aluminum foil
Beef jerky or salmon jerky
Canned fruit juices
Canned meats, vegetables, beans and fruits
Dried fruit
Granola bars and trail mixes
Peanut butter and crackers
Water: 1 gallon or 4 litres per person per day)
Manual can opener
Water purifying tablets
Zip-loc freezer bags

Tools and Miscellaneous Items

Shovel
Hatchet
Swiss Army knife (with knife, pliers and screwdriver)
Needle and thread
Nylon rope
Duct tape
Twine or string
Candles (for warmth and lighting)
Lighter or waterproof matches
Mosquito netting
Backpack for supplies
Five Gallon (20 litre) pail with lid (can double as portable toilet)
Water canteen with strap

I read somewhere that Dog Biscuits are great for emergencies...especially when hiking. You aren't tempted to eat them so you save them but they are edible and will give you what you need in an emergency! Great list...thanks. I am off to check my pantry now.
