Creating Your Internet Dating Profile Name

Binary Love

When you first join a free internet dating site, it can seem overwhelming. You read everywhere that you have to put a lot of thought into composing your profile, so you spend hours doing that. Then you read that picking the right photos is a "make it or break it" part of your profile. So you spend time searching and scanning and uploading just the right ones. And now that you hear choosing the right profile name is an important part of your success, it might be enough to make you want to scream!

But take a moment, breathe deeply, and try to shake off your frustration. Because, yes, there are a lot of things to consider when starting up with an internet dating site. But once you take the time to do those things right, there will be a lot less frustration when it comes time to actually, well, internet date.

Some things about your internet presence on a dating site are more important than others. Your pictures are more important than your tag line, for instance. And your overall profile is more important than your internet dating profile name. After all, some people are perfectly likely to click on the profile of "huggyhuggybear2001," just as others might be happy to read an email from "hotstud9inches." But sometimes a name can make or break that first contact without you even knowing it.

Don't rush it. When you first join a site like Datepad, you're eager to get started. You have dreams of meeting that special someone, falling in love, settling down, and having your modern version of a happily ever after. And those dreams very well may come true! But spending an extra day or two to think of how you want to present yourself won't set you back too far. For most sites, you're stuck with your name after you've chosen it. So be sure that the name you choose is both something you like, and something that matches the "you" you're trying to present to the world.

Brainstorm. The best profile names are the ones that both say something important about you, and encourage potential dates to click on your profile. So it can take a little time and effort to come up with the right one. The best way to do it? Brainstorm a list of words or very short phrases that describe your location, skills, interests, traits, etc., and decide which ones say what you want to say about yourself. And remember, when you're brainstorming, nothing is too silly to write down.

Mix and match. Now that you've listed a bunch of words that describe you in some way, it's time to have fun with them. Do your words look boring or uninteresting to you? Get out a thesaurus and look for more interesting words that essentially say the same thing. Then grab your pen and start playing around with your list. Give priority to the words that you feel are most important to your identity.

Get clever. Want to create an internet dating username that will really stand out? Play with writing elements like rhyme, alliteration, or even little puns when composing potential names. A username like VegasViolinist is going to be a lot more interesting than MusicChick or the like. Or choose a clever name or ultra-short quote from your favorite book or movie, and let your favorite interests speak for you.

Picking your internet dating profile name isn't the most important thing you will do in the process of finding your match online. But every extra effort you make to present yourself clearly and cleverly while attracting the right kind of people will work in your favor. The better potential dates see who you are, the better your chances of finding the right person quickly... and without a lot of frustration.

You are so right on picking a good screen name. I get alot of responses asking am I really the RealDeal as this is my screen name. Everything is so fake nowadays it does create an interest to contact me and find out more. Good luck everyone in finding your heart's desire.

Hi realdeal1956. I think one of the favorite ones I've ever seen was a lady lawyer whose tag line read 'will examine all briefs'. It still makes me laugh every time I think of it!
