Large parts of the US and Canada are currently sweltering in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). In my part of the country, once the humidity is factored into the equation it feels more like 100 degrees, although in all honesty, once temperatures exceed 80 degrees, I'm hard pressed to tell the difference between 80 and 100. All I know is that it's HOT, VERY VERY HOT. Hot enough that local authorities have issued a heat alert.
Keeping cool when it's sweltering outside and avoiding heat related illnesses can be minimized by following these tips;
If you have air conditioning (lucky you!) resist the temptation to turn the temperature down too low. The greater the temperature difference between the inside of your home and the outside, the more stress is placed on your body when you go from one to the other.
Keep your drapes or other window coverings on the sunny side of the house closed during the day. Close most of the windows, but do leave one or two open for ventilation.
Wear loose fitting and light colored clothing. Or better yet, go naked…in the privacy of your own home of course!
Avoid turning on the lights; if you have a dimmer switch, use it. Lighting generates heat, and you really don't need it to get any hotter, do you?
Drink plenty of water or fruit juices, even if you don't feel thirsty. Health professionals suggest that you avoid any drinks containing alcohol, which is easier said than done! Coffee and cola drinks should also be avoided as they are diuretics (they make you go pee more often).
Stay indoors as much as possible. If you do have to go out, wear a hat, plenty of sunscreen and stay in the shade wherever possible. Save going outside for early in the morning or later in the evening when it's cooler.
If you must cook, don't use your oven. Avoid heavy 'meat and potatoes' type meals and stick to fresh fruit, raw veggies and cold meats.
Limit your outdoor activity. Now's not the time to start training for the Boston Marathon. The most you should be doing is a slow walk around the block after dinner.
Use cool wet towels on your head and around your neck; take a bath in cool water or a cold shower.
And while you're trying to keep cool, just think, only six months until Christmas!
