How to Change Careers Without Losing Your Mind

Human beings are interesting creatures. We are going through life, tending to the normal functions that we’re designed to do (eating, sleeping, sometimes making new people, aging, internet dating...all that natural stuff) but in between all that, we have this highly, sometimes annoyingly active mind that makes us think about everything else we could or should be doing. For most people, a great part of that “everything else” involves a career.

We grow up thinking about what we might want to do for a living, then we spend time and money going to school to do that thing and spend years practicing and learning and working hard to get settled into a career.

Or maybe you went a completely different route. But one way or another, you find yourself in a place professionally. And frequently (here comes that over-active brain again), we decide that the place where we are isn’t really where we want to be.

If that situation sounds familiar, it can be a daunting thought to consider changing careers. How do you begin to go about it? Here are a few tips to consider to make this shift as efficient and mentally peaceful as possible:

Set a clear goal

Don’t just think about a general notion of what profession you want to switch to. Get specific. Imagine exactly where you want to be and exactly what you want to be doing. This doesn’t mean it’ll all work out like that in the end but the tighter your target, the more focused your aim. Having a clear idea of what you want to be and working towards that will get you as close as possible.

Start at the beginning

If you’re taking the big leap into a major professional change, you have to be prepared to take a few steps back. Maybe you need additional schooling, or to start again at the bottom of a whole new career ladder. Don’t get too caught up in the pride involved with where you’ve gotten thus far…especially if it’s going to keep you from where you want to be. It can be frustrating, I know, but on the upside, you can never have too much education.

Ignore the nay-sayers

Whether it’s from envy of the boldness and bravery you clearly possess for making such a leap, or simple misunderstanding, there will inevitably be people who disagree with your choice. This is true of just about any choice you make in your life.

I hope that by now, you’ve cultivated a balance of an open mind to people’s thoughts and a self-assured thick skin that allows you to act however you truly think it wisest. This will be a crucial time to exercise that balance. No one is perfect, and at some point you will surely suffer a bit of self-doubt based on someone else’s opinion of your career change.

Move past it. Keep a high head and strong resolve. The more certain you are in your actions, the more precise the outcome…and the more satisfaction you’ll get when you prove them all wrong.

Take it easy

Major life changes of any kind are difficult and usually slow to transpire. Take things one definite step at a time, leave yourself open to change and make sure to take care of yourself. Don’t be afraid to take gigantic leaps, but at the same time, don’t bite off so much at once as to be damaging to yourself. Get enough sleep and exercise and in general, just be kind to your body and mind. You need all the mental and physical strength you can muster, especially now.
