Internet Dating: Taking a Good Connection to the Next Step

Online Deal

When you're internet dating, you tend to meet a lot of people that spark your interest. You have a quick conversation or three, then you arrange to meet. Next comes the nerve-wracking part. Now that you've connected on a free internet dating site and think you might like each other, it's time to take that connection to the next step. That is, it's time to see if that connection will translate to the real world.

The first in-person meeting is one of the most delicate moments in a potential relationship. No matter how good the connection seemed when you talk online, that first meeting provides all too many chances to disappoint.

Want to increase your chances of seeing your first in-person meetings go off without a hitch? Read on.

Move quickly.

One of the biggest mistakes that users of internet dating sites make is to go too slowly. While it's a good idea to take your time with some parts of a romantic relationship, transitioning between online chatting and meeting in person should be done quickly. You don't need to chat with somebody 8 or 10 times before you give them a call on the phone. In fact, just once or twice will do fine. Remember, the person you're talking with is probably also chatting with several other people. By moving forward quickly, you stand a much greater chance of capturing and keeping their attention.

Choose your photos wisely.

It can be so tempting to use your most flattering (and oftentimes your oldest) photos on your internet dating profile. But I can't say it enough: what you need to be is honest. Put several photos up on your internet dating profile, and be sure that each and every one of them is less than a year old. Make sure they show you clearly and as you actually are, and that at least half of them are full-body shots.

Putting yourself out on an internet dating site for everybody to see can make you feel a little vulnerable. But honesty is the best thing you can do for your success --and your self esteem-- in the long run. You can never expect that first meeting to go well (and for that connection to grow) if all your date can think about is how disappointed he or she is by your looks. It's a painful thought, but it's better to face it now than later down the road.

Stay local.

While it's possible to meet somebody who lives far away on an internet dating site and have it work out (in fact, it happens all the time), your chances of transitioning successfully into a real-world couple are much higher if you "shop locally," so to speak. Not only does this erase a whole host of unnecessary complications, it also moves you to the front of the pack, competition-wise. Chances are, the person you're chatting with will prefer to look at his or her local choices before deciding to branch out. This gives you a definite advantage.

Follow it up.

One of the things that makes internet dating so great can also make it a little confusing at times: there are a huge number of people online. Singles who are very seriously searching for that special someone tend to contact and meet a lot of different people. So just because you met somebody and haven't heard from them, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're not into you. Be sure to keep yourself in the forefront of your date's mind by sending off a pleasant little email after you meet them. While you can expect most of your dates to contact you if they're eager to see you more, not all of them will. When it comes to following up, you got to take initiative.

Taking an online connection on an internet dating site into the real world is a delicate process. But if you're straightforward, honest, and efficient, there's no reason why you shouldn't have plenty of successful first meetings.
