World Background

Whether you think they're strange, funny, sad or just plain silly, here are some snippets of odd news from around the world

First, let's go to Germany, where playing fetch with Rover has taken on an extra dimension. The owner of a dog in Erkrath discovered that the rusty object her dog was playing with was in fact a live WWII hand grenade. Munitions experts were called in to defuse it. Even sixty years later unexploded grenades and bombs are still found in Germany.

Also playing with fire was a fisherman off the coast of Panama City, Florida. Authorities report that a fisherman reeled in a live air to air guided missile some 50 miles off the coast and kept it on his boat for 10 days before heading back to shore. The Gulf waters are a weapons training ground for the US navy and air force. Bomb squad personnel dismantled the weapon which was said to be live, very unstable and extremely corroded from floating around in all that salt water.

Next we visit New Zealand, where, according to the New Zealand Herald, a widow has claimed the title of becoming New Zealand's biggest internet dating scam victim after "losing" $680,000. In spite of being an "intelligent" woman and repeated warnings by the folks at the local Western Union office from where she sent the money that all was not as it appeared, she's now broke and on the verge of losing her home.

Now on to Vasselboro, Maine in the US, where "nippy" waitresses at a certain coffee shop are covering up against a recent cold snap. "Nippy" you ask? Well, it seems that this is a topless coffee shop, and when the shop burned down, business resumed in a tent. Nippy indeed!

Those of you thinking of surprising Mom with a new mattress may want to take a lesson from an Israeli woman who did just that. After tossing out the old mattress, Mom's surprise turned to horror. It appears that Mom used the old mattress to house her life savings, an estimated one million dollars worth of US dollars and Israeli shekels. The family was last seen scouring the local dump.

Workers at a Goodwill store in Toronto, Ontario were handed a surprise windfall when two paintings that were left as a donation were sold yesterday at auction for over $150,000. No word on whether or not the donor was aware of their value.
