Online Flirting Tips and Tricks

Christmas Celebration

1. Use Relatable Humor

With internet dating, humor is your best flirting weapon. But since all of us have a different sense of humor, it's also important to tailor your humor to the person you're speaking to. While this may seem difficult if you don't know somebody well, there are ways to personalize your humor just by looking at their online dating profile. Read a person's comments about their life, interests, and opinions, and relate to them in a humorous and personal way. Already have an online conversation going? Then pay attention to what is said, taking notes you can use for jokes and funny comments later on down the line. It takes some time and effort to be funny, but when it comes to online flirting, humor has the biggest pay-off.

2. Flirt with Flattery

Flattery is a very good flirting tool online, as it replaces the appreciative glance and up close and personal flirting you might normally do. The keys to effective flattery and compliments, however, are honesty and creativity. When giving compliments, be sure that you mean them. And be specific. "You really remind me of Miss Davis, my 5th grade teacher. I was head-over-heels in love with her when I was 11," works a lot better than a simple "you're very pretty."

Don’t focus only on his or her appearance. Compliments about a person's personality, sense of humor, etc., can be just as flirty and flattering as compliments about their looks.

3. Keep it Light, Short, and Upbeat

In life, flirting is all about having fun. It should be the same online. Don't allow your comments to get too deep and heavy, even if your first instinct is to do just that. Keep the topics of conversation light, or even silly, and don't let yourself go on and on about the things happening in your life.

Feeling moody and want to complain about you boss or your fussy mother? Call a friend, and avoid accessing any online dating sites for awhile. A dark three-page email doesn't lead easily to flirting, and might scare somebody off. Emailing seems so informal that it can be easy to say more than you want to. But if you want to flirt, you need to keep it light.

4. Surprise them with Links

This is something a lot of people don't think of when they're flirting online. You have the entire internet at your fingertips... so use it! If you see an article that somebody you're talking to would be interested in, send it to them, along with a funny little comment. Showing that you've connected personally with somebody and know what they might like can make you seem incredibly appealing.

5. Master Emoticons

You'll probably find differing opinions about emoticons everywhere you look. Some say never to use them; others say that they're necessary for casual communication. The truth is, while emoticons can seem a little juvenile, they can also be useful. Use them sparingly, but don't be afraid to use a simple smile or wink to punctuate a racy comment, double entendre, or dry joke. Emoticons can help to clarify what you mean --especially with humor-- but using too many can be obnoxious and even a little creepy.
