Is the concept of a North American Union coming to our continent? Some conspiracy theorists and intellectuals think that it may be. After all, the concept of united countries works really well in Europe. There, qualifying European nations give up a portion of their country's sovereignty in order to be part of a larger nation, the European Union. In exchange, each country within the union shares a single, more powerful currency and opens their borders to both trade and residency. This makes traveling from place to place (and even living in another country within the EU) simple. It also helps less prosperous countries to find a better foothold for their economy.
What is the North American Union?
The concept of a North American Union, or NAU, follows the lead of the European Union pretty closely. Theoretically, this union would break down the borders between Canada, Mexico, and the United States in order to form a union of countries. These countries would share a common currency (referred to theoretically as the Amero), as well as free trade and open residency to all. Like it does in the European Union, this would be very helpful for less prosperous countries (namely Mexico) in improving their economy and become a larger global influence
Is an NAU in our Future?
A vast majority of Americans are opposed to the idea of a North American Union. And if you're one of them, you'll be glad to hear that this isn't going to happen anytime soon. Essentially, the idea of an imminent NAU is a conspiracy theory that originated in 2005, when George W. Bush, Paul Martin (the Prime Minister of Canada), and Vicente Fox (the President of Mexico) met in Waco, TX to discuss relations between the three countries.
At the time, they agreed to establish what they called the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, which would address issues such as security and terrorism, free trade, and working to make all three countries more competitive in the global market. No part of the agreement talked about closing down borders or combining the three countries into one great nation.
Will the idea of a North American Union come into fruition one day? It's possible.. But for now, the NAU is just a pipe dream for some, and an interesting theoretical discussion for others. And if it does come here, will a North American Union work as well as the European Union? That's a question that only time will be able to answer.
