Movie Night

Tired of tweaking your internet dating profile and want to relax awhile in front of a movie? Complex, adult-oriented movies can be great for improving your perspective and expanding your mind (the good ones can be, at least). But sometimes you just need a break from all that. Whether you've got kids of your own or just feel like being a kid for awhile, watching a kids' flick can be the perfect thing to help you relax and disconnect from the world for awhile.

While most kids' movies are filled with, well, kid stuff, some are almost as enjoyable for adults as they are for kids. Want to keep from going crazy watching movies with your kids, or want to have a little fun with your brain turned off for awhile? Read on for the top 10 kids films that adults love.

10. The Incredibles.

The Incredibles is the first of many Pixar movies you'll see on this list. Why? Because Pixar films are the perfect combination of visual "wow" and wonderful story. The Incredibles is a story about a middle aged couple and a dysfunctional family that just about any adult can relate to. Silly and slightly cynical, parts of this film are very adult. And a lot of fun.

9. Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

This movie is British humor at its best-- and it's not just for kids. While kids love the silly story and funny-looking characters, the movie is full of adult humor that'll go right over the kids' heads. Plus, it's a ton of fun to look at.

8. The Goonies.

Especially for guys, The Goonies is a movie that will always be relatable in a lot of ways. Parts of it are perfect depictions of what growing up is really like. Sure, it's a silly adventure story with a bunch of kid protagonists. But it's also funny and insightful for grown-ups, too.

7. Shrek.

Yes, a movie filled with toilet humor and references to boogers and bad teeth can be just as fun for adults as it can for kids. Shrek is such a good-looking and big-hearted film, it's impossible for adults not to enjoy it just as much as kids do. Half of the jokes in the film are aimed at the adult rather than the child audience, and the story itself is sweet and touching. Eddie Murphy as "Donkey" reminds us of why we ever liked Eddie Murphy in the first place; when he's not wearing a fat suit or dressed as a space man, he's hilarious.

6. Spirited Away.

While it's visually stunning, this movie is really all about story. In the film, childhood fantasies become a reality for the young girl at the center of the story. If the fact that it won an Academy Award isn't enough to get you to rent it, the sweet story and wonderful, imaginative images should be.

5. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

This is one that makes the adults cry just as much as the kids. A story about loyalty, giving, and adventure, there's not much that this classic film doesn't have. Both for kids and the adults.

4. The Muppet Movie.

When watching something while you're drunk or high is pretty much the epitome of "awesome," you know it's not just for kids. The Muppets have their roots not in Saturday morning cartoons, but in the very adult TV show, Saturday Night Live. This movie is the perfect balance between tons of fun for kids, and very entertaining for adults. After all, most of the jokes are geared towards the grown ups watching.

3. Wall-E.

Another absolutely wonderful Pixar movie. I fell in love with Wall-E after seeing it on the big screen. This movie is deep, important, poetic, and very sweet. If you can watch it without feeling something for the title character, you probably can't feel anything at all! This one is so intelligent and subtle that it's almost more for the adults than the kids.

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Creepy, funny, and totally tongue-in-cheek? That's what you get when Tim Burton does animation. The soundtrack is eerie and original, and the visuals are out of this world. This one's scary enough that it may be too much for younger kids... but wonderful enough to become a Christmas or Halloween classic for adults. A cult classic masterpiece that will never get old.

1. Ratatouille.

As this is my list, I get to put my favorite animated movie in the top spot. Now, Ratatouille isn't one of the Pixar movies that people talk about most. But not only is it my favorite animated flick, it's one of my favorite movies of all time. While beautiful to look at (Paris is depicted like a fairy tale), this movie is really all about story-- a story about being true to who you are. Nothing about it strikes a trite or a false note; every element of the story is sweet and honest and relatable. When Remy yells, "because I'm a cook!" it makes me cry every time.

Oh, and all the food. As a foodie, I can't forget that. In fact, I think I'm off to watch this one again now. And have a snack.

Having seen all but two of these, I can promise that you'll enjoy them no matter what age you are! They also make good date movies.
