Founded in 1779 and named after Francis Nash, a brigadier general in the American Revolutionary War, Nashville’s location on the Cumberland River gave rise to its importance as a river port and railroad centre. Music City, a major record production and recording centre, was the first city in the U.S. to be granted an FM radio license in 1941, helping to bolster its reputation as the home of country music. Music is not the only thing to be enjoyed here. The home of two U.S. Presidents, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk, scene of the Battle of Nashville during the American Civil War, and preserved and restored plantation homes, Nashville also has the Parthenon, a full scale replica of the original Athen’s Parthenon, it houses the city’s art museum.
