Founded in 1267, the discovery of coal deposits in 1763 led to a dramatic increase in population and industrialization over the next 200 years. The city has undergone major changes in the past 20 years; coal mining operations have ceased and only one steel plant is in operation. The Mining Museum present a look at Ostrava’s mining past, with a trip down a 250m shaft where one is able to view the mining corridors. Stodolni Street with bars, pubs and clubs is gaining in popularity and hosts the Colors of Ostrava summer music festival. Silesian Ostrava Castle is well worth a visit. Built in the 13th century, is has recently been restored. (note, no English language website, no tourist website found)
