Some information about Sitka, Alaska

The Russians first arrived in the area in 1741 with the voyages of vitus Bering and Alexei Chirikof. Their explorations spurred dozens of Russian fur traders, lured by the abundance of otter, seal, and blue fox, to venture into this new frontier. The flow of easy money inspired Russian leaders to establish the Russian-American Company (fashioned after the British East India Company). This new organization had limited governmental powers and a total monopoly in the fur trade.

Today, Sitka's 8000 residents take great pride in their town's colorful history. Although little physical evidence that this was once part of Russia remains, a scattering of artifacts and a number of recently restored sites recall the bygone era.
