As the nation’s capital, Washington, DC has many historical landmarks, including the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial. One of the most recent, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, has a memorial wall comprised of two blocks of black granite, with a chronological listing of personnel killed or missing in action as of 1982. No visit to Washington is complete without the Smithsonian Institution, a research, educational and museum complex that embraces free museums such as the National Air and Space Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. A major centre for the performing arts, Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre Company performs works by classic playwrights such as Euripides, Oscar Wilde, and of course, Shakespeare.
