Calgary, Alberta is the fastest growing city in Canada and is known as both the gateway to the Great Canadian Rocky Mountains but also as Dallas north due to the large impact on the economy of oil companies located there. Home to 1 million people, Calgary is world renowned for "The Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth" with the annual Calgary Stampede. For 10 days starting in early July the whole city gets involved in parades, hoedowns, chuck wagon races, cowboy roping, steering and riding contests and above all lots of drinking, good food and tons of fun. Bring your cowboy and cowgirl boots and hats as you will seem out of place without them. While the city has rapidly grown in the past 10 years with the Alberta oil boom and there has been a huge influx of people from other parts of Canada and the world due to the availability of jobs, there is a distinct down home charm that has been largely unaffected. Many say the people in Calgary are so friendly and down to earth that meeting people and enjoying oneself in a crowd, even when you know no-one, is instantaneous and genuine. While it may be the allure of jobs, the thriving entrepreneurial business spirit, the close proximity to the nature of the foothills and mountains that attract people to come to Calgary, many contend it is the loving and giving nature of Calgarians that is infectious and is the main factor for most in making Calgary their long term home. Everyone who caught a glimpse of how Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics, is aware of the genuine hospitality the people of the city display.
