The state of Oregon’s requirement that every city and metropolitan area in the state implement an urban growth boundary means that one is in farm country 15 miles outside of the city. Though some argue that this has limited the city’s growth, it has also safeguarded the surrounding farmland from urban sprawl. This legacy of preserving open spaces can also be seen in the city’s parks, including Washington Park, which houses the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Japanese Garden and the International Rose Test Garden. Newly opened, the Museum of Contemporary Art showcases the finest in Pacific Northwestern art and design. Ballet, symphony and opera performances are held in the Portland Centre for the Performing Arts.
