I would like to know......what is Dutch cooking anyway. In Amsterdam, I could only find a fish on a bun and "toast" which is a piece of bread with cheese and ham baked on the top.

Dutch dishes, hmmm, croquettes (usually fish), french fries with mayo (very european..when I first moved to Canada and asked for mayo with my fries they'd give me this stupid little, and I mean LITTLE paper cup with mayo totally useless), raw endive and potatoes with gravy, pancakes (think crepes) with syrup made from sugar beets, poffertjes (dollar pancakes only fluffier and better) with butter and icing sugar, oliebollen on New Year's Eve (kinda like Dutchies at Tim's, only they're ball shaped not square) with icing sugar (I still make them every New Year's Eve), Hutspot (carrots, potatoes, onion, all mashed together...with gravy).

All in all, nothing out of the ordinary, quite fattening, but very tasty!

Yes, I tried the Herring and onions when I was in Amsterdam and well.....it was just not what I thought it would be like.....I fed it to the birds flying over my head...they seemed to enjoy it.
